Game freezes when loading.

First off, I love this game. Spent hours on it. Now my latest game, 12 hours in, freezes as soon as I load it. The game becomes unresponsive and I have to quit and try again. The save still freezes. This was a 5 star game, but this issues makes it hard to commit to another one before it is fixed. Also, it started lagging a lot as the world was explored. Fix these and it is back to 5 stars.
